My opinion is that people should mirror-shine shoes only if they are plain round or almond towed shoes. Shoes having designs on the toes look best well-blackened but not mirror-shined, especially brogues (wingtips).

I used to attend hotel functions often, and I wore standard dress shoes and then changed into my mirror-shinned shoes once at the hotel. My ‘hotel shoes’ seldom stepped on the asphalt.

An interesting addition, Brodie. I would consider that said layer of polish would have to be considerable in order to withstand anything more than a passing scuff.

I love a high gloss shine on the toe, it shows that I care about the activities that I attend.

If you constantly find yourself scuffing your shoes due to general clumsiness, then having that solid layer of wax can prevent deep scuffs on the leather of the shoes as it only cracks the wax.

I cannot tell you how many times that a mirror shine has saved me from permanent damage to the caps of my shoes.

I have put in time and effort, but I still haven’t created a mirror shine.

The only thing that you should have added was an example of “pebble and cross grain shoes. Some shoes may look like you can put any kind of shine on them, but be careful. My suggestion is to first ask the manufacturer or the seller what kind of leather in the shoes made from. Second ask them if they can be shined. I have shoes that you can’t shine, on these I use “extra virigin olive oil. The oil itself will have a nice shein added to shoes after to “buff” them. The oil has an added advantage of helping them to repel water.
