Never worry about your ties becoming crumpled in transit again! [Image Credit: Fosinz]

Traveling with a necktie can be risky; they are easily squished or creased in luggage, and what’s the point of having a tie if not to look good? Check out this simple and inexpensive solution for frequent travelers: the necktie travel roll case. While we don’t recommend storing your ties rolled for longer than necessary, this is a great solution for getting from point A to B.

Fill your tie cases with Fort Belvedere ties!

Each of these stays, which measure 2.5″ by 3/8″, vary in color from a warm brown to a deep tan, and thanks to the natural flexibility of the horn, they will offer years of service, keeping your shirt collar points from appearing lank or crumpled.

Anker PowerCore III Sense 10K ($20)

Here is what one of our writers, Elaisa, has to say about this power pack:

“I like my purchases to be worthwhile, so I always try to find the best brands that will satisfy these three considerations: cost, quality, and aesthetic (I know not everyone will agree with this, but let’s be honest, everything needs to look good these days). So I’ve been using this power bank for almost 2 years now (gifted this during Christmas Manito-Manita last year), and it has proven its worth. This has been dropped a few times, and I couldn’t see any scratches or cracks, although the back is prone to fingerprints—it’s not really a problem for me. The standout factor for me is how super lightweight it is, despite being able to charge my phone 3-4 times, plus it’s fast charging! Compare this with other options of the same charging capacity, which are heavy, bulky, and really add weight to your luggage or travel bag. This power bank, however, is travel-friendly and compact enough to fit in small bags. I also use this to charge my DJI Pocket 2, and it can charge it up to three times, allowing me to take videos of the beautiful places I visit. If you look at its textured cover, you’ll notice the cool, modern look of the surface details, and I love the effect  (I also love gray, so …). It’s the first thing others notice, too, often earning me compliments, so I’m really happy with this one.”

Air Tags / Galaxy Tags / Tile Trackers ($30+)

Sven Raphael's Samsonite polycarbonate luggages
With a tracking tag tucked inside, you will always be able to track down your stray luggage.

Are you constantly losing little items like your keys, the remote, or a commonplace book? Or are you afraid that your airlines might lose your luggage? Consider a discreet but extremely helpful tracking tag that allows you to hunt down those lost items wherever they might be hiding. Consider Airtags for optimization with Apple products, Galaxy Tags for Android phone users, or Tile trackers for a generic option.

Classic Vinyl Records ($30+)

Miles Davis Kind of Blue on Vinyl
Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue on vinyl is one of our favorite records.

Audiophiles often say that nothing compares to the pressed-in audio fidelity of a genuine vinyl record. We’re inclined to agree, and if anyone on your “Nice List” owns a turntable, consider expanding their LP collection with a few classic records. We suggest In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning by Frank Sinatra, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, and Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

You can find re-releases on Amazon or originals in your local record shop.

Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co.

Smoky Trio ($33)

Enjoyed as a cooking ingredient, a crumble over salads, or by itself, tinned fish from The Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co. is a delectable stocking stuffer that any fish-loving fellow will enjoy. Caught in Norway and smoked in the state of Washington, he will flip over this fantastic fish; we suggest starting with the Smoky Trio pack of salmon, mackerel, and rainbow trout.

Highball Wood Cocktail Muddler ($38)

Cocktail Muddler
A wooden muddler could be the perfect addition to your home bar. [Image Credit: TwoTmbleweeds]

Muddling cocktails helps to release the fragrant oils of citrus fruits and herbs. Some muddlers can be too narrow or slippery, which makes a simple Mojito far more work than it should be. This muddler is nearly as wide as a typical highball glass, offering a better grip and preventing the fruits and herbs from escaping being crushed. For the home cocktail enthusiast, a muddler is a tool that is as attractive as it is functional.

Luigi Bormioli "Veronese" Rocks Glasses ($60)

When your dad drinks, make sure that he drinks in style. Luigi Bormioli is one of our favorite producers of beautiful, functional, and practical barware. We especially like their “Veronese” line of rocks glasses because they have a lovely heft that feels great and keeps your drink in place while the thick glass prevents your hands from warming up cold beverages; the beautiful classic lines don’t hurt, either!

eReader ($105+)

Preston Schlueter wears an elegant outfit containing a navy blazer with gold buttons and an ascot

This Gift is Preston-Approved!

A dedicated e-reader eliminates the distractions of other devices, allowing the user to focus fully on reading. When Preston was gifted an e-reader (in his specific case, an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite) by his wife, he was initially unsure whether or not he would get much use out of it; after all, he had considered himself someone who appreciates the tactile, experiential nature of paper books. While this remains true, Preston immediately realized the benefits of the e-reader when taking a trip to Sweden in the spring of 2024. Not only did he have a more engrossing way to occupy his non-conversational downtime at airport gates and on trains than simply scrolling on his phone, but he could choose from a far wider selection of books than if he had endeavored to bring physical copies along. Further, many e-readers support free e-book loans with a valid library card, so Preston was happily able to reengage with his local library. He reports with some pride that after going several years finishing one book or none at all annually, he has read five books and counting in 2024!

Real Balsamic Vinegar

Genuine Balsamic Vinegar from Modena, Italy by Villa Ronzan ($110)

When we say “real” balsamic vinegar, we don’t mean the kind you buy at the grocery store or even on the shelves of your local Italian specialty store. Authentic balsamic vinegar is produced in a strictly regulated, time-intensive process carrying a D.O.P. stamp. One of our favorites is made by Villa Ronzan.

HORL Knife Sharpening Set ($189)

Raphael sharpening knives
Raphael is smiling as he thinks about how much better it is to cook with sharpened knives than dull thanks to his HORL knife sharpening set.

A good chef knows that his knives are only as good as their sharpness, because dull knives are ineffective and dangerous; but getting knives professionally sharpened is inconvenient and can be expensive. Enter the HORL Knife Sharpening Set, featuring all of the tools that you need to keep your fine knives in fine shape.

Raphael Schneider loves to cook, and he has derived considerable use and benefit from this set, so he highly recommends it. In fact, it is so easy and fun to use that Raphael almost looks forward to sharpening his knives, meaning that he is more regular in his care. This attentiveness drastically improves the lifespan of the expensive German and Japanese knives that the Schneiders own.

Shun Premier 8″ Chef’s Knife ($200)

Shun Chefs Knife in Damascus Steel from Japan
Shun Chefs Knife in Damascus Steel from Japan.

We’ve tested numerous chef knives. There are many we like, such as the Wustoff knives from Germany and the Evercut Furtif from France, but the one we like the most is the Shun 8” Premier chef’s knife from Japan. It is lightweight, surgically sharp, easy to use, and comfortable for most hands. What makes it an especially stunning investment piece is how beautiful it looks on the counter with the gorgeous dark wood handle, its gold cap, and the layered Damascus cladding with a hammered tsuchime finish.

Whether leaving the bath or leaving the pool, a quality and classic bathrobe keeps away the chill while layering on the class. Fort Belvedere Leather Wallets ($270)

If he uses it daily, he should love it, so find a wallet he will love at Fort Belvedere!

We aimed to create a bifold wallet that combines spacious storage with a slim profile, using high-quality full-grain leather for durability. By precisely skiving the joining sections, we reduce thickness, and each material is chosen to ensure a sleek look without losing function or sturdiness. We redesigned the central pocket layout to make it slimmer without losing capacity.

This wallet offers eight or ten card slots and a divided main pocket, maintaining its slim profile even when fully loaded, thanks to our careful design choices. While other brands might achieve thinness with smaller card slots, tighter card placement, or synthetic linings, we focus on intentional design to keep the wallet thin and functional.

Bowhill & Elliott Opera Pumps ($380+)

Jack in black tie with Bowhill and Elliott opera pumps

Let's Hear from Jack Collins!

“Am I biased because I live near Bowhill & Elliott? Perhaps. Am I biased because I’m a classic style enthusiast who loves his Bowhill & Elliott opera pumps? Absolutely. When it came to assembling my first black tie ensemble for my 30th birthday celebrations, I knew I wanted something that would be specific to an eveningwear outfit, so no high-shine oxfords for me; it had to be black patent leather. The beauty of the opera pump is that you can then also wear them with a white tie ensemble if ever given the chance, so you’re getting a surprisingly versatile shoe in one purchase. With an almost indestructible leather sole, the opera pumps from Bowhill & Elliott pair longevity with comfort, as the low vamp and quilted lining make them perhaps the most comfortable element of your eveningwear wardrobe. Plus, Mr. Sinatra found opera pumps to be so comfortable and stylish that he used to wear them for traveling. You can’t get a better endorsement than Frank.”

Riedel Wine Decanter ($400)

Dining room table set with wine glasses, a wine bottle, and wine decanter.

Decanting allows wine to breathe, which helps to release its aromas and flavors. This is especially beneficial for young red wines, which can be tight and closed off right out of the bottle. Riedel has been manufacturing luxury glassware for decades and remains a leader in the field, and our writer Eb receives nothing but compliments when he serves wine from this elegant decanter that also has the benefit of being very easy to clean.

Beautiful Maglia Umbrella Handle

Maglia Dark Maple Umbrella ($440)

Getting soaked in a sudden rainstorm is never a good look, so make sure the gent in your life is ready for any weather by arming him with a telescopic umbrella from Maglia, makers of fine umbrellas since 1854. Built to last, perfectly waterproof, and beautiful, too, these umbrellas are some of our favorites.

Take shelter under this umbrella now!

Baracuta G9 Harrington Jacket ($450)

Raphael wearing a green G9 Harrington Jacket Baracuta, white chinos, and sunglasses.

When Raphael first reviewed the Baracuta G9 Harrington jacket, he didn’t think that he would like it. Imagine his surprise when it quickly became one of his favorite transitional jackets.

We’ll let his review speak for itself:

“First of all, it comes in a really large range of colors but it also has a very pleasing slim modern cut, even though it was designed in 1937. I’m really pleased with the length of the sleeves. On top of that, it’s a very functional jacket; I can wear it when it’s raining outside when I need to pick up some groceries or drop off my daughter somewhere.

If you consider the price per wear and you just wear it ten times during the spring and ten times during the fall for just ten years, that breaks down to $1.95 per wear which I think is totally worth it.”

$500 to $1000

The opera can be a wonderful experience for everyone, including opera fans and soon-to-be opera fans!

During the season of giving, consider a gift that can be used year-around: tickets to a recurring cultural event, like a season of plays, musicals, or operas. While season tickets are available at many price points, for an unforgettable gift, why not splurge on prime orchestra or mezzanine seats? After all, who doesn’t love an excuse to get all dressed up?

Montblanc MB 01 Over-Ear Headphones ($600)

Headphones on top of a bag
Raphael loves his Montblanc MB 01 headphones because they fit so comfortably over his ears.

If the man you’re shopping for is an audiophile, he should never compromise when it comes to enjoying the beauty of sound; too often, headphones are made too small for men with larger ears, like Raphael. Whether he has large ears or not, he will never have to compromise with these classic over-the-ear style headphones from Montblanc. Made with high-quality aluminum, fine leather, and robust silicon, these headphones will last even when taken on the road or through the skies on long trips.

This model even features an elevated shoe rack for airing shoes; Nakata has truly thought of everything.

Lello 4080 Musso Lussino Ice Cream Maker ($700)

Raphael eating ice cream from his ice cream maker
Raphael is a dad who loves making, and enjoying, his own ice cream.

We all scream for ice cream, and with this fun and easy ice cream maker, your dad can make it himself! With a 1 ½ quart capacity this industrious little machine can freeze up to three quarts of ice cream or sorbet per hour. Fully automatic, you only need to fill it with ingredients and then push two buttons with preconfigured settings for different frozen confections.

Raphael received this exact model as a gift from his family and making his own ice cream has quickly become one of his favorite hobbies. Every time Raphael makes ice cream for others he is inundated with compliments and after dessert he is happy to show off this handy gadget to his guests.

Cartier Tank Must ($3450)

The Cartier Tank is wearable and allows you to wear it with everything.
Is this classic luxury watch worth it? See what Jack Collins thinks!

Jack says: As an icon of not only horology, but also of design, the Cartier Tank has always been on my radar as a “grail watch”. The simple, elegant, and utterly timeless design pairs with so many varieties and combinations of clothing, making it an extremely versatile watch. The price is also an attractive factor, as many Tank Musts were produced in the 70s and 80s, meaning you can find an exquisite version on the vintage market for around $1500 – $3000. When compared to the price of similarly iconic watches, and when you consider how much wear you’ll get out of it, it’s a remarkably low investment AND cost-per-wear item that’s still valuable to treasure and eventually hand down as an heirloom piece. As a final thought, the quartz-powered Tank Must makes it a tremendous watch to travel with due to its reliability, and the almost silent movement (and lack of a seconds hand) means it feels and looks far more elegant. Invest in an additional strap to change out between light and dark colors for added bang-for-your-buck, or go with an expert-level forest green, oxblood, or gray strap for the ultimate “one-watch collection”.

Berkel Flywheel Slicer ($6600)

Red Volano flywheel slicer

For the man who has everything and loves to eat, consider a manual flywheel meat slicer that adds a unique culinary twist to any kitchen space. Raphael enjoys this example from Berkel that offers several benefits that make it a standout choice for both home and professional kitchens.

Made with high-quality materials and attention to detail, these slicers are not only durable but also add a touch of elegance to any kitchen. Their vintage design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, making them a conversation piece.

Using a Berkel slicer can enhance the flavor and texture of the food. The sharp blade and precise slicing help maintain the integrity of the food, ensuring that each slice retains its natural juices and flavors. This results in a superior taste experience that is sure to impress guests and elevate any meal.

How To ALWAYS Be Well-Dressed https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/always-be-well-dressed/ https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/always-be-well-dressed/#comments Fri, 31 May 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/?p=186170 We have spent thousands of hours producing content intended to help you look great in classic men’s style, but today, we’ll summarize how to always be well-dressed.

NOTE: This post is sponsored by Nomos Glashütte from Germany. At a time when many watch brands are owned by big conglomerates and prices are going up and quality is going down, Nomos continues to produce artisanal, manual wind, and automatic watches with in-house movements, focusing on quality; and they’re an independent maker. And so, we’re honored we can partner with them.

Available now from authorized NOMOS Glashütte retailers!

1. Make Every Day an Occasion

The first thing you can do to always be well-dressed is to make every day an occasion. Just think about how confident you feel at a wedding or an important business meeting when you put a little effort into your look and the way your chest pops up, and your mind is set; it really makes you feel good about yourself. Frankly, there’s zero reason why you can’t unlock that same confidence every day of the year.

Of course, we don’t expect you to wear Black Tie to a gym or a three-piece suit to the grocery store. After all, being well-dressed doesn’t mean to always dress formally, but to be appropriately dressed for the occasion. That means, yes, you can be super casual and still be considered well-dressed. And it makes sense.

The three hosts of the Gentleman's Gazette - Raphael, Kyle, and Preston look dapper and confident in their outfits.
The three hosts of the Gentleman’s Gazette – Raphael, Kyle, and Preston look dapper and confident in their outfits.

You’re out in public, you’re meeting new people, or maybe they recognize you because you’re always the person who stands out from the crowd in a positive way. So, when you’re going to the grocery store, and you know you’re going to carry heavy bags home, then a casual ensemble is the way to go. It communicates comfort and ease, and it’s also practical.

Of course, it’s not just about the occasion but about your personal style and needs as well. Take a look at Preston, for example. He always runs hot so, often, he wears short-sleeved shirts. Here, you can see him pairing one with a pair of light gray trousers and loafers. He isn’t particularly dressed up, but, obviously, he puts some thought into his outfit. Because of that, it has a much better effect than if he would wear a worn out t-shirt and some joggers.

So, what’s a simple way to elevate any casual ensemble? It’s accessories. For example, Preston could wear a hat, which will make the outfit truly unique; or he could have a bold pair of socks that stand out between the shoe and the pants, or he could wear a wristwatch that doesn’t just have a plain old white or black dial.

So, here, Preston is wearing a Nomos Tangente 38 date in the color Schlossgrün green, which means as much as “castle green.” And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a green castle, but the color combination of the light cream, a bit of red, and this beautiful green are right up my alley.

NOMOS TANGENTE 38 DATE SCHLOSSGRÜN

TANGENTE 38 DATE SCHLOSSGRÜN

The case is stainless steel and polished, the strap is a medium gray and textile, and the hands are rhodium-plated. So, you can see, color-wise, there’s quite a bit going on. But, if you think about it, gray, green, the red of the minute indicators—these are all colors that you often find in classic menswear and, because of that, it’s rather easy to combine, which is not something you might think when you see a bold color dial in the first place. If this color isn’t your jam, they have 30 other colors to choose from.

So, is the Nomos Tangente 38 date in castle green the be-all-end-all watch and the first one you should buy? Perhaps not. This watch is a really fun way to elevate your outfit and always be well-dressed. You probably noticed the powerful effect the Schlossgrün dial had in our previous outfit, which brings us to our second point of always being well-dressed.

2. Rock the Rainbow

If you go back a hundred years, all the way to the swinging 1960s, color played a more important role in classic menswear. If you go back even further, men were true peacocks, wearing fabrics like velvet and silk in illustrious colors. Because men wore colors more often, it was easier to master the art of color matching, pairing, and coordination.

As we said many times before on this channel, a great place to start in terms of color is the color wheel. If you want to learn more about that, we have an in-depth video and we also have something for more warm weather colors.

How to Use the Color Wheel to Assemble Superior Outfits

Personally, I love colors and, most of the time, I like to incorporate a bolder color into my outfits. Today, it’s a green color. Other times, I like to wear a bold pair of pants. For example, one of the fourteen colors in our Stancliffe corduroy line. Every time I wear one of those pants, I get complimented on it. People say, “Oh, that’s a beautiful color,” or “These look nice;” and because the cut is a true high-rise, people notice and say, “Oh, this is different from what I wear. Where do you get those?”

Now, we have them in traditional shades of navy, brown, and olive green, but also bolder ones like sky blue or goldenrod yellow or a bold red.

Now, of course, you may say, “It’s your business to be well-dressed and you’re a clothes horse, but is it right for me?” No, I’m not saying you have to wear a bold green pair of pants, but it can be fun to have something that stands out from the crowd. For example, today, I’m wearing a pair of linen trousers in a white and kind of pale brown Prince-of-Wales check pattern. It’s not a bold color and, from afar, it looks like a uniform color, but when you come closer, you can see the pattern of it.

Raphael wearing a pair of linen trousers in a white and pale brown Prince-of-Wales check pattern.

Maybe you have a more limited wardrobe or maybe you stick to the basics or maybe you just haven’t mastered the confidence yet to wear something really bold like a jacket or a pair of pants. Then, one of the easiest ways to incorporate colors into your outfit is, again, using accessories.

For example, today, I’m wearing a boutonniere flower, which are handmade from silk in Germany, and they just add visual interest to your button hole; or look at my pocket square, I could have gone with a plain white pocket square, which is probably something most men interested in classic style own, but I chose one with kind of a wavy edge and a green border, which is something that we designed at Fort Belvedere just like our boutonnieres.

If that’s too much for you, again, maybe a ring, your socks, your shoelaces, or a wristwatch could be another fun way to introduce color. As an example, let’s consider the bold yellow minute ring of this Nomos Tangente 38 date. They call it “Lemon Biscuit,” which is a perfect name for the color of this lemon cookie.

Although this bold color scheme is grounded by a cream face, the blue numerals make it look really cool and bold. Here, you can see this watch being paired with an oatmeal-colored safari jacket, which is perfect if you want something casual but something that looks very intentional. The pants are white and off-white and paired with brown loafers. It is definitely a summer outfit.

At first, it might seem like a very neutral outfit with colors of brown in the shoes, white in the pants, and oatmeal in the jacket, but you can see with the accessories—they really pop. There are the blue socks from Fort Belvedere, there’s that blue stripe in the shirt, and then there’s, of course, the Lemon Biscuit with the blue numerals.

TANGENTE 38 DATE LEMONBISCUIT

TANGENTE 38 DATE LEMONBISCUIT

Takes its name from the creamy afternoon snack of the favorite uncle of a NOMOS watchmaker. The yellow with the Lemon Biscuit watch works well with tones of white, brown, and oatmeal, so it all harmonizes but it’s distinctly different.

So, you may say, “Well, it works well with this outfit, but really I don’t have a safari jacket and I can’t afford to have one watch for just one outfit.” Sure, I hear you, but let’s look at this outfit here.

David, the same person, is wearing a gray suit with a green undertone. He’s also wearing a light blue shirt, which is very traditional. Now, his shirt is a Winchester shirt, meaning the collar is white and different from the body of the shirt, and it pops. So does his yellow honeycomb tie. And here we go—colors blue and yellow, perfect with this type of Lemon Biscuit watch. It’s almost like his darker grounded suit is the canvas for the bolder strokes of color.

So, when you utilize colors in your outfit, you always want to have something darker as a background color, which grounds the entire ensemble and makes the color pop. If David would have worn this same tie in yellow with a pale yellow shirt and an oatmeal jacket like the one in his previous outfit, the colors wouldn’t pop as much, and they would appear more washed out and uniform.

So, in a nutshell, utilizing color is one of the easiest ways to create a very intentional outfit that makes you look well-dressed and, especially if you consider contrast and how you incorporate it, it can really help you.

Now, personal complexions such as your hair color and a contrast to your skin tone can also play into that. In general, the more contrast you have in your complexion, the more contrast you can also wear.

Now, there are exceptions to the rules. If you’re like Kyle and you have dark hair and dark skin, it still looks really good with a high-contrast outfit. On the flip side, if you have blonde hair and pale skin, you can choose fewer contrasts, and a really stark contrast may be too much. If you want to learn more about this, we got you covered.

Best Colors for Your Skin Tone

3. Have Fun with Formality

The third thing you can do to always be well-dressed is to have fun with formality. To many, formality is something they feel is threatening them and is stifling their creativity, and they fear it.

Now, if you reframe it and think about formality as just creating the framework for you so you can be creative within that limited frame, it becomes a very different connotation. The dress code or level of formality basically guides you so you don’t have to think about all the different options of things you can wear. But, then once it’s defined, you can just be whoever you want to be.

Just think about the Black Tie dress code, which today, for most men, is one of the most formal ones they will ever attend. No, it doesn’t mean you have to wear a black tuxedo with black pants, you can have black watch tartan pants, you can have a burgundy dinner jacket; you can even have a more colored bow tie.

So, in a nutshell, formality isn’t there to hurt you. It just helps you so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel and think about all the possible things you might possibly do.

Now, when it comes to accessories, let’s illustrate that point with the Nomos Tangente 38 date Love—and no, I don’t need to translate that one. It features a versatile cream dial with a brick-red minute ring.

The blue numerals, orange hour ticks, and gray watch strap add quite a few more colors to this watch. With all those lighter tones, you might think, “Well, that is obviously a casual watch,” but you can also wear it with a formal three-piece suit.

TANGENTE 38 DATE LOVE

TANGENTE 38 DATE LOVE

The timeless red shade of Tangente date Love has a delicate hint of brown, which gives it just the right amount of warmth and depth. An ideal sign of affection for that special day.

For example, here, I have this gray suit with an orange-red stripe. I could also see this watch working really well with seersucker because it has kind of a preppy vibe in my mind. Yes, you might think the strap is not the right color for a business ensemble, but the good thing is: straps are easily exchangeable.

Even if you just have one or two watches, having five or six different straps can really help you to change the entire look of the watch. Really, I compare it to exchanging shoelaces on your shoes. With a relatively small investment, you can really change the look of your shoes and the best part is: it’s reversible—you’re not committing to anything.

Now, watch straps are a little more expensive than shoelaces, but the same concept is true. Compared to your wristwatch, watch straps are a lot less expensive, the same is true with shoelaces and shoes.

Pale Pink Shoelaces on a black oxford shoes

For example, look at this black Oxford whole cut. It’s a rather formal shoe, but if you add pink shoelaces, you definitely add a bit of whimsy to it, and it becomes a much less formal kind of look. Also, if you utilize changing up the shoelaces or the watch strap, it allows you to have more money left over to buy a really nice watch that you like or maybe a really nice suit or other expensive item. Then, if you had to buy over and over again in different color variations, it would be extremely costly.

So, if you thought of formality as something that’s limiting you, think again, which brings us to our fourth point.

4. Own Your Look

I noticed that people who I consider to be well-dressed always own their look. What exactly do I mean by that?

Well, if I look at the people, they are confident, they look comfortable in their skin, and they’re not wearing a costume, and they don’t appear to be insecure. They wear it because they want to wear it, and they’re convinced that this works for them, even though it may be very different from what all the people around them are wearing. And this is exactly the reason why we constantly emphasize you and your style and how you feel and how you want to express yourself because, at the end of the day, if I like this outfit and you wear it and you’re not confident about it, it will show; and so, overall, it’s not a look that works well for you.

So, just take the conventions, guidelines, and rules of classic style; understand why they exist; and then, adapt them to make them your own, so you create your hallmark look. And that is the secret of being well-dressed. Look at Preston, for example; he always wears a hat when he goes outside, but he often wears short-sleeved shirts.

Now, in the evening, he prefers a neat and classic elegance of the 1930s Golden Era of Menswear, and, of course, because he’s a robot.

If you don’t get that joke, check out this article.

Kyle, on the other hand, prefers more casual elements. He also likes things to fit really snug, and he doesn’t own a White Tie ensemble. That’s just not him. I think, for the longest time, he didn’t even have a tuxedo—and that’s fine. He’s still well-dressed in his very own right.

Whether he wears a nice overcoat or kind of a light-colored, cream-tone ensemble, he definitely stands out from the crowd. He’s comfortable in what he wears, even though I wouldn’t wear the exact outfit and I like things to be a bit more roomy than he does.

Look at Ivan, for example, he had his ivory-colored dinner jacket and Albert slippers in velvet, and he skipped the socks for an evening event. He also likes to wear his pants really, really short and slim at the hem. Personally, that’s not quite my look, but it really works for him and his height and his confidence level.

If you look at David, he’s wearing a black tuxedo, but he’s a metal head, and so he likes to have bolder accessories and that works for him.

So, what about my style? Some days, I like to go really formal. I like a stiff, boiled-front shirt; and other days, I go a bit more casual. Today, I’m wearing a white, French cuff shirt with a green, vintage Hermes tie. It has a jacquard weave, so there’s a bit of a shantung effect.

My jacket is from Isaia. It’s double breasted and brown with a kind of off-white, window pane over check. My pants are Fort Belvedere prototypes. They’re really high-rise. They’re full cut, but not too wide at the leg. The fabric is a wonderful silk-linen blend in this white cream and oatmeal Prince-of-Wales check pattern.

Raphael outfit rundown

My shoes are dark brown suede Gaziano & Girling Lazyman loafers, and my pocket square is from the wave series with a green wave border, as well as my kind of cherry blossom boutonniere. My socks are shadow-stripes in blue and yellow.

You might wonder, “Why wear that? It doesn’t appear anywhere else in your outfit.” And that’s true but, if you combine blue and yellow, you get green, and I have a green tie, a green border in my pocket square, and I have the Nomos Tangente 38 date in the color Schlossgrün green because I really like this green and, if you don’t believe me, just look at the color of Fort Belvedere or Gentleman’s Gazette. There’s lots of green in there because I love that color.

On my French cuffs, I have monkey fist knot cufflinks from Fort Belvedere in sterling silver. They’re heavily palladium-plated, so they won’t tarnish. Last but not least, I chose Roberto Ugolini Giardino di Boboli as my cologne because it comes in this green bottle and I wanted to be in line with the Schlossgrün watch.

By the way, you can find all the accessories from Fort Belvedere in our shop and, if you want to check out the full range of all Nomos Tangente 38 date colors, head to Nomos’ website.

5. Invest in What Looks Best

I often hear, “Man, I’d like to be dressed as well as you, but I simply can’t afford it.” I’ll let you know a secret: not everything you buy has to be super expensive. In fact, most people I know are happy to wear vintage or secondhand clothing because they recognize you don’t have to pay through the nose for quality.

What it does mean, though, is that you invest in certain things that you know will help you look your best. So, basically, you pick and choose your battles. Now, when I say “investment,” a lot of people immediately jump to money. But, there’s also the aspect of time.

If you don’t have much money, you can put in more time to, for example, find great brands that offer good quality for low value or maybe you follow my step-by-step procedure on how I score 90%-95% off every time on goods on platforms like eBay or Etsy.

How to Get 80% Off Menswear Every Time

You can still get really nice things like this Isaia jacket, which is a very high retail price. But, I scored this for $200 on eBay. Now, that’s a lot more affordable, and it was in perfect shape.

I also did a guide before where I created a whole outfit based on a certain dollar amount. So, check that out so you can see what tactics I apply to get a full outfit that really works well for me, it makes me well dressed, and it doesn’t break the bank at all.

Now, sometimes, yes, it means you have to save up money to buy that piece that you really want. Maybe it’s in a certain color or pattern, maybe it’s the fit, maybe it’s the fabric, the finish, the style, or maybe it’s a specific item like a fine wristwatch from Nomos Glashütte.

Raphael dressed in a three-piece tweed suit

Whatever it is, there is value in saving up for something like that. And I can tell you from experience—the suit that you’ve saved up for six months or a year will become a lot more valuable to you because of it.

Keep in mind, quality, material, and workmanship don’t come cheap. So, if you want something new, you will have to shell out some money for that. So, what I do is I love secondhand shopping, so I get cool things. If I find something that I really want new, I can still go for it. After all, this is exactly why we started the series “Is It Worth It?” so we can look at high-priced or iconic items and help you decide whether they’re worth your hard-earned money or not.

At the end of the day, we want you to get something that really works for your style, where you feel confident, where you look well put together, and where the environment is not really stressed more than it has to be because you have the one item that you can wear for 10 years or 20 years down the line. It’s a lot more environmentally-friendly, than if you get organic cotton that you throw away after a season or two.

So, investing time, money, and effort into acquiring your outfits but also in caring for your outfits is one of the secrets of always being well-dressed.

6. Fit Is King

The sixth thing you have to keep in mind is that fit is always king. Yes! I know you were waiting for us to say that! We’ve had an extensive range of how things should fit—from pants to jackets and suits and so forth—so please go and check that out.

So, what does that mean if we have to distill it down?

1

Buy clothes close to your size.

Buy clothes that are as close to your perfect size as possible when you start out. This doesn’t mean squeezing into something too tight or swimming in fabric that’s too loose. Take the time to try things on in the store and move around in them to see how they feel.

2

Budget some money for alterations.

Remember, almost no one fits perfectly into standard sizing. We’re asymmetrical human beings. Everything off-the-rack is symmetrical. So, you have to make adjustments to get that really nice looking fit where people are like, “Wow! You look great!”

3

Keep in mind that fit is an ongoing process.

Maybe you had a really big lunch the other day or you started working out a lot more. You’re aging, your body changes, and so will the fit of your clothes. Be gracious and understand that you may have to go to the alterations tailor over and over again to keep up with your body.

On the flip side, it can also be a great motivator to keep a certain weight or muscle mass so you don’t grow out of your clothes all the time. Properly altered clothes that fit you don’t alter your body. They just create proportions and make you look more attractive than you already are.

Appearing well-dressed doesn’t mean you have to have a 30-inch waist. You can be who you are but, with the right fit and the right clothes, you’re just the best version of yourself.

Conclusion

I think I’ll try all these different watches that Nomos sent us to see how they work with this outfit. They also have this Lakritze version, which means “licorice” in German. Definitely more muted. I think I’d change a tie, but it could still work.

FAQs

Why is it important to dress well?

Dressing well every day boosts your confidence and ensures you make a great impression in both personal and professional settings. It shows that you value yourself and how you’re perceived by others, which can often translate into how people interact with you.

Can I afford to dress well on a budget?

Absolutely! Dressing well doesn’t necessarily mean wearing expensive brands. It’s about choosing quality over quantity, fit over price, and classic styles that last longer. Invest in key pieces like a good suit, a classic leather belt, and a pair of well-made shoes to start with.

What does it mean for an outfit to be well-fitted?

A well-fitted outfit should hug your body comfortably without pulling or sagging. Jackets should allow you to move your arms freely, trousers should sit just above the hips, and there should be no excess fabric billowing. Seek the advice of a tailor to adjust off-the-rack items for a perfect fit.

What is NOMOS Glashütte?

Founded in 1990, they are known for making superlative-quality artisanal manual-winding and automatic mechanical watches. Why have you partnered with NOMOS for this video?

Occasionally, the Gentleman’s Gazette partners with other brands to share our views on their products or services. Today, NOMOS has asked us to help them launch the special edition of their Tangente 38 Date. Even though we are being compensated for making this video, we would never endorse a product that did not meet or exceed the high personal standards to which we hold any product we make or endorse.

8 Rules of the Watch – How, When, & Why to Wear Watches https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/11-rules-of-the-watch/ https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/11-rules-of-the-watch/#comments Wed, 13 Mar 2024 15:00:00 +0000 http://www.gentlemansgazette.com/?p=22200 In a world where owning and wearing wristwatches is a matter of personal preference rather than necessity, it pays to make sure you’re wearing your choice of timepiece with style. Whether it’s luxury watches, formal occasions, or a casual quartz watch, this guide outlines the must-know tips to elevate your watch and style game.

1. Wear your watch on the wrist that suits you

Most people will default to wearing a watch on their non-dominant wrist. This means that right-handed people will choose to wear the watch on their left wrist, and left-handed people will adorn their right wrist with their timepiece. The reasoning is quite sound, as it means either your dominant right hand or left hand is free to perform important tasks (like writing notes) while your non-dominant hand can simultaneously be used to tell the time without pausing the task at hand.

This works in principle, but the reality is it’s not a hard and fast rule that you need to abide by. There are many stylish people who enjoy wearing a wristwatch on their dominant hand, and why not? If it works for you and you enjoy it, then go for it. The key is to ensure your watch is comfortable on your wrist – make sure it’s not competing with your wrist bone, and you’ll be able to stay stylish in comfort all day long.

2. Make it fit

Like any other garment or accessory, your watch should fit you properly in two key ways. The size of the dial should be proportional to your wrist, and the band should fit snugly but comfortably. A loose band looks sloppy, so take it to your jeweler to have it sized to your wrist, or purchase smaller leather straps if this is your preferred material.

Oversized is Over Done

For the last couple of years, oversized watches have become the norm in men’s style. This popular trend only served one purpose: to scream for attention. An oversized watch dwarfs your wrist, throws off the proportions of your entire outfit, and simply doesn’t “fit” well into a nicely combined outfit.

For a watch enthusiast, those large dials are nothing more than for show. If you want to be taken seriously in the world of horology, stick to watches that fit your wrist.

3. Don’t wear the same watch every day

Even if you only own one nice watch, you shouldn’t wear it every day for several reasons. First, if the watch is a piece that you love, giving the watch a break will make it last longer. Second, one watch is rarely suited to the variety of outfits that you’re likely to wear in a given week. The office, the gym, sporting events, dinners out, and parties all require different clothes and hence different watches. If you wear the same watch daily, chances are that 20-30% of the time it is the wrong watch to be wearing.

Regardless of your budget, if you love wearing a watch, try building up a small collection of reputable watches that suit all the various needs you have during the week, and give your favorite piece the occasional break.

Watch Rules FAQs

What wrist should a man wear his watch on?

Wear a watch on the wrist that feels most comfortable to you, and suits you best. Although there are default rules to wear your watch on your non-dominant wrist, this is largely only a starting point for most people. Try it out on either wrist, and stick with what works best for you.

What is the etiquette for wearing a watch?

Within the realm of classic style, an elegant dress watch is going to be appreciated by many. The etiquette surrounding the use of a watch will be largely similar to the use of a phone – essentially, make sure you are using it in a non-distracting way that means you can be present with others. Otherwise, it’s best to skip the chunky sport watches and instead go for a smaller, elegant model.

How to properly wear a man’s watch?

How you wear your watch is entirely up to you, although there are some starting pointers to consider. Typically, you’ll want to make sure the watch sits comfortably on your wrist, neither too loose nor too tight. Also, start by trying your watch on whichever is your non-dominant hand, but feel free to switch this to suit you.

Where should a watch sit on a man’s wrist?

Most people will agree that a wristwatch is most comfortable when worn just above the wrist bone to prevent discomfort when moving your hand throughout the day. That being said, you won’t want the watch to be so far up your wrist that you need to roll your sleeves each time you want to check the time!

Can guys wear watches on the right hand?

Whichever hand you choose to wear your watch on is the correct hand for you. Don’t let societal conventions dictate how you’re able to comfortably wear your timepiece.

Is there a rule for wearing watches?

While anyone can wear a watch, there are a few expert tips to make sure you’re wearing it stylishly, as we outline in this guide!

Is it ok to wear a watch on your dominant hand?

Whether you prefer to wear a watch on your dominant or non-dominant hand is purely your choice. Traditionally, wearing a watch on your non-dominant hand allows you to perform tasks like writing while also checking the date or time, but it’s ultimately down to your personal preferences.

4. Pair watches with outfits appropriately

Just as you wouldn’t sit on the beach in a morning coat, you also don’t want to wear your elegant dress watch while sailing on choppy seas. Try matching the type of watch you wear to the activity you’re involved in each day. If you’re unsure what you’ll be doing, pair it with your choice of clothes; durable sports watches with athletic wear, dress watches with business wear, or a simple Timex Weekender with beach wear.

If you’re invited to a formal event or gathering and the dress code calls for black tie, attitudes have changed about wearing a watch. Historically it is considered impolite to wear a watch, but the rules regarding black tie have softened to accommodate wearing a simple dress watch with a black dial and band if you choose. A pocket watch is an alternative. For the rare white tie event, tradition demands that you do not wear a watch at all.

a man wearing a diver's watch with a suit

Dive Watches with Suits

Just because James Bond does it, doesn’t mean you should. James Bond is fictional a spy who lives a larger-than-life existence that needs him to be ready for anything at any moment. Plus, there’s the marketing tie-in that keeps the Omega firmly on Bond’s wrist! In reality, dive watches are bulky, they don’t fit well under a suit jacket, and simply don’t work with a classically styled formal outfit. leave the dive watch for casual wear and pair a simple dress watch with your suit.

4.a) Wear dark with dark, and light with light

If you’re out during the day consider a lighter-colored face such as white or cream. However, at night focus on darker dials such as black, grey, or brown. Just like a tuxedo is for evening wear and you wouldn’t wear it to brunch, a dark watch dial should be on your wrist at night, rather than during your 9 am tee time at the country club.

5. Match your metals & colors

Try to match the metals and the colors of the watch to the rest of the outfit you have on. Note the color of your belt buckles, shoe buckles, rings, collar bars or pins, and cufflinks, and choose a watch in a matching metal. Wear yellow gold with yellow gold, and don’t wear a brown band when you’re wearing a black suit. Focus specifically on the boldest parts of the watch; the color of the strap, the color of metal, and even the color of the dial.

6. Skip the bling

Wearing a diamond-encrusted watch is quite the flex, but is rarely done so by those who wish to be seen as elegant. Like an oversized watch, flashy diamonds and jewels are a cry for attention, and distract from the rest of your outfit by drawing all the attention to one point. Unfortunately, most people will also wonder if it’s real, as the majority of us don’t walk around with ostentatious time-pieces strapped to our wrists.

Watches are now worn more as a status symbol rather than an accessory to an outfit
Flashy, bling watches are now worn more as a status symbol rather than an accessory to an outfit

If the stones are subtle and enhance the overall features of the watch without being ostentatious, then they can find a place in your watch collection. Just remember to wear them in appropriate settings and don’t buy sporting watches made with tons of gold and jewels, as it runs counter to what is a more casual watch.

Finally, it should go without saying that you should never buy a watch with fake stones. If you can’t afford the real thing, skip stones altogether, as they will only cheapen the overall look and make it painfully obvious that you seek the kind of attention diamonds can bring.

7. Beware the implications of checking your watch

Even though a great watch is one of a man’s ultimate accessories, checking it can have some negative social implications even if that’s exactly the reason you are wearing it!

Winding an omega watch
It can be hard to resist looking at a beautiful watch, but be careful others don’t think you’re counting down the hours!

If you’re on a date, in a meeting, or at a social event, don’t check your watch visibly in front of other people. Just like it’s rude to check your phone at a movie or restaurant, checking your watch shows that you have other things on your mind; things that take precedence over your present company. Unless you’re still young and have a curfew, the only way you should know what time a date is over is when she says goodnight.

8. Admire other people’s watches from a distance

Just as you would never touch someone else’s wallet, don’t expect to handle a watch that’s not yours. For many men, the watch is the only piece of jewelry they own or wear, and they take great pride in keeping it dust-free, fingerprint-free, and well-polished. It’s perfectly okay to politely ask to see a watch, but don’t expect the wearer to take it off their wrist. If the watch is offered to you, feel free to accept, but try to handle it as little as possible and never place it on a hard surface where it could get scratched.

So what are the seven reasons that a Rolex won’t be a new watch on my nightstand?

Hear Why I Wouldn’t Buy a Rolex in This Video

In truth, there are many reasons why I wouldn’t choose to buy a brand-new Rolex – specifically, seven. At the same time, I can think of one specific circumstance in which a Rolex might be right for me. Curious as to my reasoning? Read on to find out.

1. Rolex Charges for Quality AND “Brand Name” Status

Am I Just Paying For The Rolex Name?

The Rolex “brand” is too much of what I would be paying for with a given watch. Similarly, the value that used Rolex watches yield in the marketplace is mostly related to supply and demand, not because the watches are inherently superior to their competitors. Now, don’t get me wrong! Rolex makes good watches; they’re robust, they don’t need much maintenance, and they hold their value if you get the right model. But a Rolex is no more reliable, no more technologically interesting, and no more comfortable than other luxury watch brands on the market (that can cost a lot less).

Look At The Watch, Not The Brand Name

By searching around on the internet and taking a closer look at the retail price development of Rolex watches, you can clearly see that it far outpaces the rate of inflation. However, if you look at the product itself, it remains virtually the same, with only very slight changes mechanically. In other words, you’re paying twice as much not because the product has improved, but simply because the brand is more valuable now.

In our “Is It Worth It?” video on Rolex watches, we discuss the pros and cons of buying and owning a Rolex timepiece. Do our views align with yours on this luxury watch brand, and will you be adding a new Rolex to your watch collection?

2. Rolex Watches are a Mass-Market Product, Not Necessarily Artisanal

Simply Put, Rolex Watches Are NOT Unique

When I have to make a choice between a good mass-market product and a good artisanal product, I choose the artisanal product 99% of the time. A luxury timepiece becomes luxurious because it is somewhat unique and limited. While there are different models of Rolex on the market, to the average onlooker they all look very similar, regardless of age.

Rolex Datejust, Date, Submariner, GMT Master
Rolex Datejust, Date, Submariner, GMT Master

Rolex does this by design, as they want their products to be instantly recognizable – so one Oyster Perpetual will look very similar to another, the overall design of the Submariner is largely unchanged, and many Rolex Daytona timepieces have very similar styling. So, if it’s instantly recognizable that everyone has a Rolex, it’s not a luxury product anymore. I’d say my style is very different from most other men, so why shouldn’t I also have a wristwatch that is different from other men?

Is A Rolex Really That Special?

Rolex produces eight hundred thousand watches a year, most of which look largely the same. On top of that, look at all the fakes that are out there in the marketplace–you’ll realize that Rolexes are a mass-market product with millions of watches that all look very, very similar to one another. Personally, I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars just to have something that is basically what everyone else out there has as well. So even though Rolexes are the archetype of a “nice watch,” I don’t want to spend that kind of money just to “keep up with the Joneses” and have the same watch.

3. Buying a Vintage Rolex is Not Without Challenges

Vintage goods are great to have, but vintage Rolexes can be very tricky–because there are so many fakes out there. I’m a big fan of vintage items for many reasons; one of them is that just by nature, they’re often unique items because they’re no longer produced. The original items may have been worn out or destroyed, so what’s left is naturally a “limited edition.” Also, until the late 20th century, things were often made to last–whereas today, things are designed to break three days after the warranty expires. Because of those reasons, I still buy a lot of things vintage, even though I can afford to buy new.

Seeking Value in Vintage

Surprise! I feel the same way about watches. I have only a few, and most of them are vintage. As an example, look at the Reverso from Jaeger LeCoultre; it’s much smaller than most watches are today, yet I find it attractive on my wrist. I can wear it casually because its heritage is as a polo watch, hence its flippable case. At the same time, it has a black dial, so I can wear it in the evening with a tuxedo, or with a suit.

Is the JLC Reverso Worth It?

I’ve never seen any other Reverso quite like it in person. Because most of them are now gone, it’s probably even rarer than most limited editions out there. I bought it for a little over a thousand dollars, and I could probably sell it for more (because I got a good deal) but overall, I enjoy wearing it and I like the look.

Should You Buy A Rolex? (FAQs)

Are Rolex watches actually worth it?

Whether a Rolex is worth it not will be largely subjective, but from a practical point of view, a Rolex should be well made to a point of lasting many years. They also don’t typically require frequent servicing, making them a good choice for those less interested in spending a lot of time and money keeping their watches in top shape. Realistically, Rolex watches are built to be a practical piece first and foremost, which is acertainly a good argument for them being worth the money.

What’s the point of owning a Rolex Watch?

If you’re simply looking for an elegant timepiece, then a Rolex likely isn’t the right choice for you. If you’re looking for a timepiece that has many years of history that has acheived pop culture status, then a Rolex might be the choice for you. Essentially, the point of owning a Rolex in the 21st Century is largly because you value what the brand name can bring to you rather than the horological reasons behind owning one.

Why do people like Rolex so much?

The appeal of Rolex is similar to the Apple corporation; the products perform well, but aren’t the most elegant or luxurious solution. It’s largey a case of good marketing. As you can see in old Rolex ads, the emphasis on being a “manly” watch that only “the best” would choose has done a lot to raise the profile of Rolex to the heights it currently enjoys.

Is Rolex a status symbol?

Undoubtedly, Rolex watches are considered to be a status symbol. Many celebrities and other figures of importance have worn a Rolex throughout the years, and for many people this is the reason they desire to own a Rolex.

Is a Rolex actually a good investment?

Not all Rolex watches are exactly alike, although many will look very similar. For many collectors, things such as the age of a Rolex watch, the particular make, model, and styling ill also influence the price. It’s also very difficult to say which new Rolex watches will appreciate or depreiate in value as time goes on, so purchasing a brand-new Rolex as an investment may not be a great idea. Some vintage Rolex watches tend to gain more interest and a higher sum at auction, but it’s not a guarantee you’ll see a return on any money spent on a Rolex.

Do people notice if you have a Rolex?

Rolex, much like Apple or Tesla, is a highly recognized brand name. Furthermore, the design of many Rolex watches has been replicated throughout the world of horology, so people are bound to have some form of familiarity with Rolex timepieces. However, your timepiece needs to be a part of your style, and reflective of you as an individual – if you’re just wearing a watch to get noticed, then others may think negatively about your intentions.

Are Rolex watches respected?

Whether a Rolex watch is respected depends entirely upon the group in which you choose to wear the Rolex. Among other Rolex enthusiasts, sure, but for connoisseurs of fine timepieces a Rolex might not have the same level of intrigue as a rare or higher-grade timepiece might have.

Is it easy to buy a Rolex watch?

Much is said about the long waiting list for Rolex watches at an authorized dealer. If you’re looking to purchase a bran-new Rolex watch soon, chances are you’re not going to be very successful unless you’re not particularly fussy about the make and model you get. You’ll likely have better luck acquiring a pre-owned Rolex watch, as you’re not waiting for the watch to be made and shipped – what you see is what you get.

4. Rolex Watches are Aggressively Counterfeited

Fake Watches Can Be Surprisingly Accurate

Counterfeit Rolexes are produced in such big numbers that their quality is actually rather good, even at a much lower price point. There are also a lot of OEM (“Original Equipment Manufacturer”) parts, and when you repair your watch and service it, they could potentially be used. When you buy from reputable dealers, they have a reputation on the line–which is good, because they don’t want to sell you fakes (otherwise, they’d lose their business).

Be Prepared to do Some Detective Work When Buying a Rolex

At the same time, dealers can buy watches from wholesalers, which can come without the box and papers sometimes. Maybe a given watch was serviced at one point in time by an unauthorized Rolex dealer, who put in parts that are exactly the same in shape, but not authentic Rolex parts. In these cases, if you were to want to resell the watch one day, it would likely be marked as being partially fake. As such, there are many risks involved when buying a pre-owned Rolex that you have to keep in mind.

Even if you’re working with a reputable seller, maybe there’s a part in there that is not original and authentic. If you truly want to buy a 100% original timepiece, the only certain method is to buy a new Rolex, which comes with a high retail price.

5. Most Rolex Models Aren’t a Good Fit for My Personal Style

Are Rolex Watches Actually Stylish?

The models of Rolex that hold their value are the “sports” or “professional” models. Meanwhile, my style is more formal and more dressed up than most men out there; because of that, I prefer dress watches when wearing a timepiece. Now, Rolex has a dress watch line (which is not so well known) which is called “Cellini.” The Rolex pricing structure puts this line much higher than many of their stainless steel sports models (which usually sell for six to ten thousand dollars themselves). Most Cellini watches are made out of gold, and because gold is so much more expensive, the retail price is higher.

Rolex Cellini Dress Watch

The upside to Cellini watches is that they’re not faked as often, and you can pick up vintage models for as little as three or four thousand dollars. Personally, I find sometimes that their looks can be very dated depending on the decade they were produced, but they also have very classic watches in their lineup.

Rolex Cellini: The One Reason I Might Buy a Rolex

In other words, here’s the “special exception” in today’s article: if I would ever buy a Rolex, it would most likely be a Cellini in a classic gold color. I could wear it with a tuxedo or with other more formal clothes that I’m likely to wear. The overall design is closer to an element of fine jewelry which is just much more my style because, in my opinion, it’s smaller, slimmer, and more elegant than a sports watch with a stainless steel bracelet.

6. A Rolex Watch is a Status Symbol (That I Don’t Feel a Need to Have)

As you know, I run my own business: the Gentleman’s Gazette website and the Fort Belvedere e-shop. I’m not doing million-dollar sales deals in boardrooms across corporate America – but if I were doing that, I think I would strongly consider buying a Rolex watch, because it can indicate success and signal to the other person, “This guy is serious.” As such, it’s more part of a uniform than an expression of personal style.

A Timepiece Has to Fit Your Personal Style

On the other hand, I have an online and offline track record that is very public. People can see that I’m really into men’s clothing, they can see that we have happy customers – so I don’t need to prove anything to anybody with the watch I am wearing.

A watch can instantly create visual interest to an outfit
Raphael doesn’t feel the need to show off with his timepiece

It’s because of this desire to show off with an expensive watch that many people put a lot of stock into owning a Rolex, creating a “high demand” for certain models. Many men will proudly share stories of how they’re known by name at various Rolex dealers and how they’re “on the waitlist for that GMT-Master II that’s had scarce availability in recent years”. Personally, I’m very happy to be my own person and buck the trend by focusing on curating a wardrobe and watch collection that works for my style. I don’t need to be on long waiting lists just to replicate what celebrities and many other men are wearing.

7. Personally, Watches Just Aren’t a Passion of Mine

If you know me, you know that I’m truly passionate about a lot of things. However, watches are simply not one of them. For example, if I drive a fast car, I feel very emotionally attached to it, I feel alive. When I see a nice watch, I like the look of it–but emotionally, it leaves me cold. I mean, I honestly like the look of certain watches; the Reverso, the Tank Americaine, the Royal Oak, the Patek Phillippe Calatrava, or watches from A. Lange & Sohne. However, when push comes to shove and I have to decide to put money down, I’ll most often decide to spend my money on other things.

Seeking Joy in Other Avenues

As an example, I prefer cufflinks and rings over watches; I know many men don’t, but I do. They’re collectible, they’re a lot less expensive, and they’re more unique. Now, rings and cufflinks are an accessory, just like a watch, so emotionally they’re not as exciting as driving a fast car and feeling the acceleration and the breaking. At the same time, I would say I still like cufflinks and rings more than watches. Frankly, I’d struggle to remember to put on a watch, because it’s just not natural to me. I like to have my wrist free of any weight, even though I know that if I wore a wristwatch every day, I would probably become used to the weight.

In Conclusion: Why Rolex Isn’t For Me

In a nutshell, I would not buy a Rolex because first, it is not my style; second, I don’t really care for the design that much; and lastly, it is simply too expensive, and I would rather spend my money on other things. Just because the world around you loves Rolex doesn’t mean you need to have one if it’s not your style. Conversely, just because a lot of other men like Rolexes doesn’t mean you can’t like them, too. We truly believe that big purchases of this nature should be more about staying true to yourself, especially considering all the marketing hype around watches that’s out there right now.

Rolex GMT Master
Rolex GMT Master

To illustrate this point: Brock McGoff from the Modest Man did a video about buying his first Rolex recently; at the end of the video, he mentioned that no one ever called him out on his Rolex, and he thinks that no one really noticed it! At the same time, he seems very happy with his investment, because he likes the look of it and it makes him feel good. If that’s you, then by all means, go out and buy a Rolex. For me, it’s just not that big of a deal, I prefer other watches, and overall, I like other things more than watches.

Outfit Rundown

In today’s video, I am wearing a Rolex GMT Master with a blue and red dial and a black face in stainless steel. I also chose cufflinks in lapis lazuli with sterling silver and a carnelian in sterling silver because they are red and blue, so it works well, and is consistent with my watch.

Because of that, I added a white shirt with a knit tie in a mottled gray, which is from Fort Belvedere, just like the white Italian linen pocket squares with hand-stitched or embroidered polka dots, which works well with my outfit. Watches for Small Hands and Wrists https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/watches-small-hands-wrists/ https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/watches-small-hands-wrists/#comments Wed, 04 Oct 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/?p=50074 With the popularity of large and oversized watches, it is getting more difficult for men with small wrists to find watches that are the right size and proportions. If this is a familiar problem for you, look no further – we’ve got everything you need to find the best watches to cater to your small wrist size.

Digital watches have recently been very trendy items
The classic Casio digital wristwatch is renowned for being a great size for those with smaller wrists

Do I Have a Small Wrist?

The first question on your mind when shopping for a watch may well be “Do I have a small wrist?” But what defines a small wrist? That’s probably the better question. The fact is that it often has nothing to do with your overall stature. There are many tall men with small wrists and many short men with large wrists. It really comes down to your actual wrist size.

A diagram of three wrists and three watches; the first watch is too small for its wrist, covering only about half the diameter. The seond watch is correct, covering about 2/3 the diameter of the wrist. The third watch is too large, covering the entire wrist diameter.
A properly sized watch should cover about 2/3 of the width of your wrist

A small wrist can be considered as being under 6.5 inches or 17 cm in size. If your wrist is larger than that, but you still feel your wrist is small, the same principles outlined in this guide will work for you. If you don’t have a tape measure and want to find out if this article is for you, take a dollar bill and wrap it around your wrist. U.S. paper currency is exactly six inches long, so if it’s touching or just shy of touching end to end, you have a small wrist.

The Problem with Modern Watches: Most are Jumbo-Size!

The Polo Bear on a watch
The Polo Bear on a watch

Buying a watch is similar to purchasing any item of clothing; if it doesn’t fit you, it will be out of proportion to the rest of your body. A too-large watch for your wrist size will make you look smaller, or worse, childlike. We all like to dream about an heirloom Rolex being passed down to us, but if it’s too big when worn it just looks silly.

Big Watches are Just a Trend

Unfortunately, recent trends have caused watchmakers to produce larger and bolder timepieces, which isn’t ideal for those who have slim wrists. Nothing looks more awkward and out of place than a slight gentleman wearing an oversized watch. He can be wearing the most elegant and well-fitting bespoke suit, but that watch will end up being the focus of anyone who sees him – and usually not for the right reasons!

The moonphase view on a JLC watch up close

Function First, Fashion Second

First and foremost, a timepiece is a time-telling device. Second, a fashionable accessory. Like most accessories, such as cufflinks or collar bars, the most timeless choice is often subtle, elegant, and understated. For the same reason you likely won’t want to wear large bling and chains, wearing oversized and gaudy watches is likely low on your list of priorities. A watch should be used to enhance your appearance, not alter it.

There are plenty of reasons why larger-than-life watches are domineering the marketplace, from the utilitarian pilot’s watch to the harsh reality of fast fashion capitalizing on the latest trends. However, you can rest assured that there are many options out there for those who want to wear a timepiece that’s more in proportion to their own stature, or simply wish to buck the trends of jumbo watches!

Buying a Watch for Small Wrists? Here’s What to Look For:

With the goal of buying a watch for smaller wrists being proportionality, there are a few quick tips you can use to ensure you’re shopping smart:

Small Wrist Watch Essentials

1
Instantly transform your watch with NATO watch strap

Ensure the case size is 40mm and under

The most important factor is the size. Ideally, you want a watch with a case size that is under 40 mm. The size of the case will be integral in determining how that watch will look on your wrist. If you happen to have larger wrists but smaller hands, a smaller watch of this size will also work as it makes the wrist look smaller and the hand, larger.

2
A comparison of an Raphael's older Reverso watch model and a newer one

Aim for a thinner watch for a lower profile

The next thing worth looking at is the thickness of the watch. The thinner the timepiece is, the better it will look on a small wrist. Thin watches, which, as it turns out, are more collectible anyhow and will retain their value. The reason for this is that takes for more skill to make a thin watch movement than a thick one.

Go for a strap that is proportional to your wrist size

It’s a good idea to know what size strap looks best on you so you can determine what size band will fit. If you’re buying a new strap, you’ll need to know the lug width for your watch – this is the measurement of the strap in mm at its widest point where it’s attached to the watch. Less expensive watches will tend to have standardized straps on them, which means you may be better off purchasing an after-market strap, and we highly suggest thin leather straps or understated metal bands. You can read more in our watch strap guide.

Make sure design elements like the crown and pushers aren't too obtrusive

The final thing worth considering is the design of the timepiece. Simpler timepieces without embellishment will work the best on a small wrist as they brings less attention to the watch. A black leather strap, a metal or white gold case and a simple dial will blend in better than a yellow gold band, a diamond encrusted bezel and a bold complication on a dial with huge hour markers. The same goes for the standard parts of a watch such as the lugs, the pusher, the crown, etc. The larger or bolder these parts, the bolder the watch will appear on your wrist.

Watches for Small Hands & Wrists FAQs

What size watch is best for a small wrist man?

Typically speaking, watches with a case diameter of up to 40mm will look the best for men with small wrists. Aim for 36mm to 38mm as the ideal size.

What watch is best for small hands?

People with smaller hands may benefit from choosing a watch with a rectangular face, as this in itself can have slimming qualities. Look towards classic examples such as the Cartier Tank for inspiration.

Should men with small wrists wear watches?

Men with large or small wrists should feel comfortable to wear a wristwatch if they so choose! The size of your wrist will help determine which size timepiece you look for. The goal is to have the watch look in proportion to your wrist: not too big that it dwarfs your hand, not so small it has no presence.

Do watches look good on small wrists?

Absolutely, the right watch will look good on a small wrist. As long as the watch you choose is slim, elegant, and complements your overall proportions, it will look good on you.

Is it OK to wear oversized watches?

Although there has been something of a trend for oversized watches in recent years, it is just that: a trend. While it may look good this year, you may regret it next year, so stick with a classic, elegant, and timeless watch that will look good for years to come.

Is 44mm watch too big for small wrist?

Simply put, yes – a watch over 40mm in size will be too big if you have a smaller wrist. Look at watches with a diameter of around 38mm instead for a far more flattering look.

Do watches look good on skinny guys?

Finding the right watch is the way to go if you want a timepiece to look good on a slimmer wrist. Finding the balance between elegant and dainty can take a little bit of research, but our suggestions for the perfect watches for smaller wrists are a great place to start!

Do big watches look good on small wrists?

Typically speaking, big watches on smaller wrists are usually only seen as part of fashion, and rarely seen worn by truly stylish individuals. Opt for a timepiece that both suits and fits your style and stature.

Can guys wear small watches?

Smaller watches are genderless. If they are designed in a stylish, understated way, a timepiece could theoretically be worn by many different people of varying sizes and statures. Remember, men’s watches used to max out at around 38mm – far more elegant than some of the jumbo watches we see today!

Is 40mm watch too small for a man?

While 40mm may be considered the “average” size for men’s wristwatches these days, there are some people who simply won’t suit a watch of this size, therefore requiring a smaller size of a timepiece. If you fit into this latter category, aim for a watch with a size of around 36 to 38mm.

Want a Watch for a Small Wrist? Go Vintage!

There are many factors that you need to take into account when buying a vintage watch.
Vintage watches come steeped with charm as well as an inherent wearability for those with smaller wrists

Without a doubt, a vintage watch will be one of the sure-fire ways to ensure an attractively proportioned watch for your wrist size. Since wristwatches became more prevalent in the 1920s and 1930s, the focus was always on elegance in design, and the overall size of a watch played a big part in this. Even functional watches with a stainless steel bracelet were more elegant than modern-day versions!

What this means is that you can quite safely search for a vintage timepiece from any decade from around the 1930s to the 1980s, secure in the knowledge that it’ll likely fit a smaller wrist much better than most modern-day wristwatches. This is even true for many luxury watches, as vintage models from heritage brands such as Rolex are typically more streamlined and smaller on the wrist than what you’ll find today. This includes some of their most well-known offerings like the Rolex Explorer, Rolex Datejust, and Rolex Oyster Perpetual.

If a vintage Rolex is too much money for your wallet, you can look to their sister brand, Tudor, for equally fit timepieces. Again, going for vintage Tudors will garner the best results, as they look and feel the best on a smaller wrist.

Vintage Watches can have Drawbacks

Jack’s vintage Tourist watch is hand-wound

Of course, vintage watches aren’t always going to be a reliable purchase, due to their age alone. While you might be able to scoop up a bargain, it could quickly turn into a more costly endeavor as a list of repairs to the movement, hands, or sapphire crystal racks up an impressive bill. Fine if you have the capital, but it won’t be everyone’s idea of an adventure in horology.

It’s not only the possibility of repairs to consider, but vintage watches may run differently than how you’re used to. For example, many vintage watches will feature a hand-wound or manual movement. This requires a shift in mindset to be able to deal with a watch in a different way, as it’s a different experience if all you’ve known is the standard quartz movement timepiece!

Is a Vintage Watch Right for You?

Naturally, there are many options when it comes to choosing a brand-new watch for a smaller hand or wrist size. However, as watches vary massively in price, we’ve curated a small selection to act as a suggestion for a range of styles that’ll suit anyone who enjoys a more modern aesthetic to those who prefer a classic style influence in their life. And, for an added bonus, you can find some of our top choices for affordable alternatives to luxury watches that may fit the bill below.

Patek Philippe Calatrava

Conceivably the most celebrated dress watch ever made, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119G in particular is understated and elegant, with a small 36mm case. When it comes to a good low-budget watch, the Weekender is a favorite. With a reliable quartz movement, they do last a good while, but they’re so inexpensive that you can buy a few for the summer and interchange them based on your mood or the outfit you’re wearing. They also make a great gift for birthdays or “just because.” Of all the entry-level watches on the market today, this is one of the most popular ones you’ll see.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

Go for minimal and slim watches for Black Tie like the JLC Reverso
The JLC Reverso

Rectangular and square watches work very well for men with smaller wrists, and the benefit of the JLC Reverso is that it is two watches in one. With one display perfect for daily wear to the office, it slides and flips to reveal a dark dial that works elegantly for an evening in black tie at the opera.

Is the JLC Reverso Worth Your Money?

Cartier Tank

Another excellent choice for men with small wrists, the square and rectangular cases on the Tank make it one of the world’s most identifiable timepieces that has graced the wrists of some of the planet’s most important leaders.

Where to Buy a Watch for Smaller Hands & Wrists?

The internet can be great for the average-sized man who looks good with any watch, but for men with slight wrists, it can be a money pit where you end up looking like you borrowed your father’s watch. If the seller doesn’t offer unconditional returns, avoid buying online. Instead, focus on looking in the store, where you can try the watch on. Then simply jot down the make and model of the watch you like and look for a more reasonable price online if you’re adept at purchasing timepieces online.

Vintage watches on sale.
Buying vintage watches is having decades and decades of choices to choose from.

For men with limited watch knowledge or those seeking a luxury timepiece, we don’t often suggest buying online as the risk often outweighs the reward. Instead, focus on authorized retailers, brand-owned boutique stores and other reputable brick-and-mortar retailers where you can ensure the watch you’re getting is authentic and covered by warranty.

Ranking 57 Watch Brands (BEST & WORST) – ft. Federico Iossa https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/ranking-watch-brands/ https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/ranking-watch-brands/#comments Fri, 15 Sep 2023 02:00:00 +0000 https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/?p=176674 Watches are among the things we enjoy here at the Gentleman’s Gazette, and we believe a good watch round out a great outfit! Choosing a timepiece can be a challenge, though, as many brands are in the market, and if you’re looking to invest in a luxury watch, it’s going to be tough, as you’ve got price, function, style, and quality to consider! We’ll rank 57 luxury watch brands with Federico Iossa today to help.

Video Transcript [Lightly Edited for Clarity]:

Sven Raphael Schneider: Welcome back to the Gentleman’s Gazette. In today’s video, I’ll be ranking watch brands and if you’re a regular follower, you know that I’m not the biggest watch expert, and so I brought in Federico from “Federico Talks Watches.” Thank you for coming.

Federico Iossa: Pleasure. Thank you for having me.

Sven Raphael: So it’s gonna be fun to see what the rating is going to work out to be. Normally, Nathan is here and he’s an absolute watch nerd. But, he already did some videos with Federico and you can check it out on his channel or on our channel. So, without further ado, let’s get rolling.

Ranking 57 Watch Brands (BEST & WORST): 1. Rolex

Rolex Explorer 2 Black Dial16570
Rolex Explorer 2 Black Dial16570

Federico: Rolex, solid C- plus.

Sven Raphael: I’d rank it like a B in terms of like brand recognition, value.

Federico: Well, if we’re talking about value and brand recognition, it’s an A. But, if we’re talking about watchmaking and quality product, which is something you love to talk about at the Gentleman’s Gazette, it’s a C in my humble opinion. Like a solid, like unspectacular, middle-of-the-road luxury watch

2. Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe Calatrava Automatic Silver Dial 18kt White Gold Men's Watch Clear Silver
Patek Philippe Calatrava Automatic Silver Dial 18kt White Gold Men’s Watch Clear Silver

Sven Raphael: Next up is Patek Philippe. Honestly, I think, in the watch world and watchmaking, the big three. I’d say it’s probably an A.

Federico: I would agree. I would say A; potentially A-minus because there’s a couple of crazy independence that might be a little bit higher, but definitely A.

3. Audemars Piguet

Audemar's Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication

Sven Raphael: Audemars Piguet, what do you think?

Federico: Audemars Piguet. So, it’s part of the Holy Trinity. A lot of people would put it in the A category. Me being a little biased, I don’t love a lot of their chunkier, more modern models. I’d say, a B-plus

Sven Raphael: I mean, I’m firmly convinced that the Nautilus from Patek Philippe and the Royal Oak; people wouldn’t love these watches if there wasn’t a hype around them/ I’m a firm believer that people just like them because they’re expensive. At least, when I look at them I’m like, “not a watch that I would want to wear.” But yeah, the Holy Trinity. I would have guessed that you would rank them between A and B somewhere.

Federico: Yeah, B-plus is what I would say. B-plus.

4. A. Lange & Söhne

An elegant timepiece speaks volumes with every fine component
An elegant timepiece speaks volumes with every fine component

Sven Raphael: Next up, A. Lange & Söhne. I mean, as a German, I think the prestige and the cache they carry is definitely more in the A range.

Federico: A. Lange & Söhne is an A all the way! All the way.

5. Omega

OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer
OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer

Sven Raphael: Omega. Well, if I asked Nathan, he probably puts them in the A range, maybe A-minus. B-plus I would guess. So, I’d say B-plus.

Federico: You know, I think it’s an awesome watch. I think you get a lot of value for money. But, if I’m ranking it solely based on quality and craftsmanship, then they’re right there with Rolex. So, I’d say a C.

Sven Raphael: In terms of if you consider value?

Federico: I mean, the value… It gets better value. I put them solidly in the B, B-plus. But, solely on craftsmanship and quality, it’s on par with Rolex. It’s a C. It’s just priced better than Rolex

6. Jaeger-LeCoultre. JLC

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date

Sven Raphael: Next up, Jaeger-LeCoultre. JLC. They always call them like, “the watchmakers’ watchmaker,” right? I got that, right? So, let’s say A-minus. Maybe B-plus.

Federico: JLC, definitely a B-plus in my book. I can’t quite put them with A. Lange & Söhne and Patek Philippe but, you know, value-wise, A-plus. Quality craftsmanship, everything overall, solid B.

7. IWC Schaffhausen

IWC Schaffhausen is an understated luxury and highly versatile timepiece
IWC Schaffhausen is an understated luxury and highly versatile timepiece

Sven Raphael: IWC Schaffhausen.

Federico: For my American viewers, it’s “I-W-C Schaffhausen.” So, this is an interesting brand because it’s very prestigious. Great history. Lately, their quality is better – more in-house movements – but previously massively overpriced. I’m torn between a C-plus and a B-minus. Somewhere very much in between there.

8. Cartier

Cartier Men's W6701010 Ronde Solo Automatic
Cartier Men’s W6701010 Ronde Solo Automatic

Sven Raphael: Let’s talk, Cartier watches. That’s a hard one because there’s like the Crash, the Tank, the Santosh, Dumont.

Cartier Tank Watch – The Hallmark of Sophisticated Elegance

Federico: It’s very hard because Cartier makes a wide range of products from quartz models that are enough to Cartier’s super fine watchmaking, which is an A. But I would say, if we have to take the brand as a whole, B-minus. Design, A-plus. But everything together, B-minus.

Sven Raphael: Yeah, design I would say like it’s really iconic and, I mean, yes, they have quartz models, which tell time more accurately than mechanical washes, right?

Federico: Absolutely.

Sven Raphael: That’s not what it’s about.

The valuable precious metals used in Cartier products are timeless and gain more value over time
The valuable precious metals used in Cartier products are timeless and gain more value over time

Federico: No, you know not at all. It’s only one of the minimal factors.

Sven Raphael: Yeah, customer service Cartier, in my experience, not that great. I don’t know what your experience is.

Federico: So, I actually used to work for Cartier. We talked about your story last night. You know, I think that, in the boutiques, they do a very good job. You were trying to deal with their online concierge?

Sven Raphael: Horrible experience online.

Federico: I think these brands just don’t know how the internet works. I mean, they just they make mechanical watches. You know, technology from the 1700s, so I wouldn’t judge them based solely on that one experience. But, you know, maybe there’s some room for improvement.

9. Nordgreen

The designer is a very well-known for his Scandinavian and minimalist watches after designing several brands.
The designer is very well-known for his Scandinavian and minimalist watches after designing several brands.

Sven Raphael: Next up, Nordgreen. Frankly, I have no idea what those watches look like. I’ve never seen them.

Federico: Who? Nordgreen?

Sven Raphael: Nordgreen. N-o-r-d-g-r-e-e-n. Well, maybe you know the next one.

10. Vacheron Constantin

Vacheron Constantin watches has the extra 150 years of experience that they have over Rolex puts VC in the category of Haute Horlogerie High Horology
Vacheron Constantin watches have the extra 150 years of experience that they have over Rolex puts VC in the category of Haute Horlogerie High Horology

Sven Raphael: Vacheron Constantin.

Federico: Vacheron Constantin. Talk about awful customer service. I’ve had a watch in repair for three months. I still don’t have an estimate yet. And then, when they called me because I thought they were going to apologize, they told me it was my fault because I like filled out the paperwork wrong. That being said, just because they don’t know how to treat people, B-minus. But, without that experience, B-plus.

11. Mont Blanc

Montblanc watches always end up at the top
Montblanc watches always end up at the top

Sven Raphael: Next up, Mont Blanc watches. If you don’t know it already, but I started my journey to classic style with fountain pens and Mont Blanc was a part of that. I bought them and sold them. Got a pair of cufflinks, then I learned about French cuff shirts and about clothing and that’s how I started. And I was around when they didn’t have watches and then they introduced them. I think it’s probably hard to break into that watch market even though it’s Swiss-made.

Federico: It takes decades.

Sven Raphael: I would guess, you know. I don’t know if there are any good watches. I would guess they’re more for like brand whores. What’s your idea?

Federico: So, this is funny because it’s a brand that’s actually evolved and put in the work. So, if you ask me this question ten years ago, solid D-minus fashion brand. But they bought the Minerva factory, which was a factory that’s famous for their chronographs. They make some very high-end complications and in-house movements; however, if we take their slow start and the fact that it’s going to take decades, I’m going to put them at a C-minus and getting better every year.

Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie Quantieme Automatic Silver Dial Black Leather Mens Watch 112536
Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie Quantieme Automatic Silver Dial Black Leather Mens Watch 112536

Sven Raphael: Interesting. Yeah, I would have not known how to rank them.

Federico: It’s a tough one, but they are getting better.

12. Chopard

Chopard Classic Classique 18 Karat Gold
Chopard Classic Classique 18 Karat Gold

Sven Raphael: Next up, the brand is Chopard. I mean, I never owned a Chopard watch but, to me, I would associate it more with like something cheaper. I would guess it’s more in the D range.

Federico: So, Chopar is a Jekyll-and-Hyde brand. They make everything from the massively overpriced ladies watches to the just-okay, racing-inspired Mille Miglia, to some of my favorite watchers in the world, which is the LUC Chopard high-end. Once again, if we have to take all of this into account, C-minus. But, it’s really a product line that goes from F to B. But, overall, C-minus.

13. Piaget

Piaget has been crafting luxury watches.
Piaget has been crafting luxury watches.

Sven Raphael: Piaget. And you know, I had that story where a family friend, you know, she bought a Piaget ladies watch, and then she kind of had it appraised and, when the appraiser heard what she paid, she’s like, “Yeah, you just want to keep it.” What I’ve seen from men is actually something I like, stylistically, right?

The Altiplano was really thin, yes, but I think, overall, in the watch market, I would guess that because of its as thin as it must be and its nice movement, right, I personally like the look of them. So, my ranking would be more like B-plus, A-minus. But, what’s your take?

Federico: So, I actually used to work for Piaget, so I know quite a bit about the brand. Very prestigious movement maker. Their movements were used by Vacheron, IWC, Cartier. However, a mess on the business side. They don’t know how to sell or market watches. This is a very tough one for me. My heart says a B; my brain says a C. So, let’s say C.

14. Blancpain

Blancpain watches are neck-and-neck when it comes to heritage and technology, which are simply amazing with both timepieces.
Blancpain watches are neck-and-neck when it comes to heritage and technology, which are simply amazing with both timepieces.

Sven Raphael: Blancpain. I’ve never had a watch really yet. I mean, I’ve seen the brand name. I think, when I heard about it first, it seemed like it was more respected in the watch world than I would have guessed it was.

Federico: It’s very respected, but it’s one of those brands that went out of business for over a hundred years and was reintroduced in the 80s. They do make a very good watch. B-minus. B-minus for me.

15. Ulysse Nardin

Ulysse Nardin has earned its special place in high horology or Haute Horlogerie a coveted watchmaking niche
Ulysse Nardin has earned its special place in high horology or Haute Horlogerie a coveted watchmaking niche

Sven Raphael: Ulysse Nardin. That seems to be more lie – don’t know – want to say, “wannabe brand.” But, my perception would be more of a like D.

Federico: So, here’s the thing, these guys are the kings of when they try they actually make something very special, but they very rarely try. C-minus.

Sven Raphael: So, what’s an example of when they tried?

Federico: When they tried, the Ulysse Nardin Freak, which is not the most beautiful watch, but mechanically, the whole movement would rotate on an axis. So, the movement would spin along with the hands, which was crazy. But, then you also have just a bunch of dive watches for seven thousand dollars with a three-hundred-dollar, ETA, off-the-shelf movement. They’re capable. They really are, but too little too late in my opinion.

16. Corum

Corum watches represent the pinnacle of luxury and refinement
Corum watches represent the pinnacle of luxury and refinement

Sven Raphael: I think for a Black Tie ensemble, there’s this brand called Corum with that very special movement that looks almost like a stick.

Federico: That’s the “Golden Bridge.”

Sven Raphael: I know we talked about this yesterday. I actually like the Golden Bridge, and I like that you like something off the beaten path. And I like some of their extreme models – the bubble models with the crazy artwork. You know, once again, my heart says B. But, it’s gotta Be a D. You know, in reality, unfortunately.

17. Panerai

Panerai Luminor Marina Logo Acciaio
Panerai Luminor Marina Logo Acciaio

Sven Raphael: Panerai. I would guess, you know, it’s kind of a popular watch with younger men who may not like the Rolex. Personally, it seems to me like it’s a bit overhyped. But what do I know?

Federico: So, I own three of them, you know, I love them when before. Well, in their first surge of popularity. You know, back in the early 2000s, they were the cool watch and that was my aspirational piece. I’m also Italian. I love the history. But I can’t lie, you know. I’m not going to lie about it. It’s movements, they’re nothing special. Other watchers look the same. They all they survive off limited editions. Even though I own three in my collection, D-plus. Yeah, D-plus.

18. GP Girard-Perregaux

Girard-Perregaux watches can hold their value well, especially certain models.
Girard-Perregaux watches can hold their value well, especially for certain models.

Sven Raphael: Alright. GP Girard-Perregaux. In the other video we talked about, where you showed me watches and I had to react, you had the rose gold, Miami douchebag watch, correct?

Federico: That was my personal watch, yes, sir.

Sven Raphael: So, I would guess you’d rank it probably in the B territory.

Federico: So, it’s a brand that’s massively underrated and undervalued and has an iconic model. Very high quality. While a lot of people will disagree with me, having touched many of them, B-minus. I think it’s a solid brand.

19. Hublot

The Hublot Classic Fusion holds its value surprisingly well.
The Hublot Classic Fusion holds its value surprisingly well.

Sven Raphael: And now the one you’ve all been waiting for. Hublot. And I know that in the watch world, they’re hated. So, my guess would be that say it’s somewhere between a D and an F. Personally, I don’t like the designs. I don’t know about the details, but that would be my guess. So, as much as I would love to say F, you know, they are relatively innovative. You know, sapphire cases, some interesting movements. It’s just, even when they innovate, it’s the ugliest possible innovation ever innovated in watch history. So, while I want to say F, I can’t but it’s a D. It’s a D.

Sven Raphael: See, what I’m surprised about is like how can something that seems to have such a collective hate still be around and and find a customer base?

Federico: Because the collective hate that you’re seeing on YouTube is from watch guys like me or maybe classic style gentlemen like you. We’re very niche, you know? For the average, wealthy gentleman that doesn’t necessarily love watches or follow classic style or watches YouTube, it can be an attractive… I mean, it’s bold, it’s heavily-advertised, and that’s almost all you really need to create a hype brand, right? It’s recognizable and it’s plastered on every billboard. So, you know, that’s my opinion.

31 Luxury Watch Brands You’re Mispronouncing

20. Bvlgari

The Bulgari brands dedication to the best makes it a favorite among most watch collectors and famous fans.
The Bulgari brand’s dedication to the best makes it a favorite among most watch collectors and famous fans.

Sven Raphael: Bulgari watches. You know, Bulgari, when I see that the brand, I think of like cheap perfume ads, so I would thoroughly put it more like in the D to F category.

Federico: So while you’re not wrong, your answer is a little outdated because you don’t follow the watch market necessarily.

Sven Raphael: I don’t know.

Federico: In the past ten years, there’s been a very big push to bring Bulgari up back to a higher place in the watch industry because it used to be very popular in the 80s. So, new models , new movements, new Innovations. While I don’t personally like their designs, they’re ugly. They are doing some cool things. C-minus, but eight, nine years ago, solid D to F, you now, in my opinion.

21. Nomos Glashütte

Nomos Glashutte Mens Ahoi Atlantik Datum 553
Nomos Glashutte Mens Ahoi Atlantik Datum 553

Sven Raphael: Next up is German watch brand, Nomos Glasshutte. Nathan said, you know, it’s a good beginner Swatch brand. A lot of people like the simplistic, Bauhaus design. My guess is like a B.

Federico: I would agree with you. You know, Jaeger is also in B, but Nomos makes the same grade just because their price point is so much lower. Fantastic first luxury watch. So, B, B-minus. Just for value, B, for sure.

22. Vincero

Vincero is a watch brand that sits nicely between two parallels luxury and affordable.
Vincero is a watch brand that sits nicely between two parallels luxury and affordable.

Sven Raphael: Now, we have Vincero watches. I would guess it’s more of an F watch. Daniel Wellington territory.

Federico: Total garbage. Straight F. No, nothing to say. F!

23. Liv

If youre looking for affordable and practical luxury watches LIV is a great brand.
If you’re looking for affordable and practical luxury watches LIV is a great brand.

Sven Raphael: Liv watches. Never heard of them. It’s probably very similar to F.

Federico: Department store, overpriced, two-dollar watch. F!

24. Breitling

Breitling watches are a luxury item & as such they come with hefty price tags.
Breitling watches are a luxury item & as such they come with hefty price tags.

Sven Raphael: So, next up is Breitling. I know you mentioned the Navitimer, so I guess probably on a B to C range would be my guess.

Federico: I’d put them right there with Omega and Rolex. You know, C. Mid-level sports watch. A little expensive.

Sports Watches For Men

25. Bremont

Bremont Watch Supernova
Bremont Watch Supernova

Sven Raphael: Next up is Bremont.

Federico: Bremont is a British-based company that just got bought by a big Wall Street firm. Lots of faux Heritage and lifestyle stuff. D-minus.

Sven Raphael: Is it “Bre-ment” or “Bre-mont”

Federico: It’s “Bree-mont,” I believe. I mean, they’re British Brothers. They’re innovating a little bit, but it’s just it’s just not worth it. Too many snafus as well. PR snafus. Just D, D-minus. Pick one up pre-owned for 10 cents, 20 cents on the dollar.

26. Tag Heuer

Tag Heuer watches age well over many years due to the quality and valuable materials
Tag Heuer watches age well over many years due to the quality and valuable materials

Sven Raphael: Tag Heuer. I think they’re a bit of a harder standing. I wouldn’t know anything about it. My guess would be you put it in the C to D range.

Federico: So, Tag would have been an F in the 90s. Great history, very bad 90s. They’re getting better now. More in-house movements. I’d say, D-plus and getting better.

27. Baume & Mercier

Baume & Mercier do retain their value and remain highly collectable.

Sven Raphael: Baume & Mercier. It’s kind of interesting. It seems to be like a brand that is kind of has more like homage watches, right? Like the tank watch and stuff like that.

Federico: So, a brand that never really innovated. I actually loved their designs. A brand owned by Richemont, but that is selling so poorly that Richemont fired all the Baume & Mercier staff and gave it to a distributor Richemont should never done that. I love them, but the reality is they’re a D.

28. Rado

Rado Ceramica Mens Chronograph
Rado Ceramica Mens Chronograph

Sven Raphael: Rado watches. Kind of an interesting design language. I know that you can buy them fake, so there must be some market for them. No idea.

Federico: Huge market in Pakistan and India. Known for their ceramic watches. Apart from that, nothing special. D.

29. Maurice Lacroix

Maurice Lacroix is a luxury watch brand based in Switzerland. Maurice Lacroix was established in 1975
Maurice Lacroix is a luxury watch brand based in Switzerland. Maurice Lacroix was established in 1975.

Sven Raphael: Maurice Lacroix.

Federico: An interesting brand that made everything from absolute garbage, some very nice watches. Their Masterpiece collection – very high end – something they no longer make. Now they just have a homage watch to the Royal Oak. I’m gonna go with a D.

30. Roger Dubuis

Roger Dubuis is a good watch brand for those seeking an ultra-high-end timepiece
Roger Dubuis is a good watch brand for those seeking an ultra-high-end timepiece

Sven Raphael: Okay. Next up is Roger Dubuis. No idea. Never heard the watch.

Federico: It’s Richemont’s Richard Mille. Very high-end watches. Very expensive watches. They change design language entirely every five years because they can’t sell them. Watchmaking, A-plus. As a brand D.

31. F.P. Journe

Journe watches use gold in their designs including in the movement, dial and cases.
Journe watches use gold in their designs including in the movement, dial, and cases.

Sven Raphael: FP Journe. I think they’re more respected in the watch world. What do you think?

Federico: FP Journe is the one of the highest-end, independent watches. Great horology. Great everything apart from customer service. It’s very hard to buy one brand new. They expect you to pay beforehand, and they expect you to wait three years to deliver one. I’ve also heard some stories if, you know, the right people get the right things, you get one faster. Watchmaking, A-plus-plus. As a brand, B-minus. Just for the games. Don’t play games.

32. Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. the luxury jewelry maker collaborated with other high-end brands to produce limited-edition timepiece series.
Tiffany & Co. the luxury jewelry maker collaborated with other high-end brands to produce a limited-edition timepiece series.

Sven Raphael: Tiffany & Co. Very iconic. My guess would be that, watchmaking-wise, they’re not at the top of the game

Federico: Watchmaking-wise, they made one extremely beautiful watch that I want to show you later because I think you’d like it. It’s the East-West. Apart from that, D-minus.

Sven Raphael: But, hey, blue box.

Federico: Blue box is true we got the Tiffany blue box.

33. Louis Vuitton

Sven Raphael: All right. Next up, Louis Vuitton. I’d be surprised if it has anything higher than a D-minus.

Federico: Louis Vuitton is one of those brands highly on the rise. The Arno family has invested heavily. They built La Fabrique du Temps, which is their new factory. While they’re probably currently a D-plus, in the next five to ten years, they’re gonna be a B-minus. You know, you don’t expect it but they’re doing big things.

Sven Raphael: Interesting. Very.

34. Bamford

On a basic level, they are just well-made, unique chronographs with good movements and tolerable price tags.
On a basic level, they are just well-made, unique chronographs with good movements and tolerable price tags.

Sven Raphael: Bamford. Never heard of them

Federico: Not even a watch brand. Just a watch. It’s just a company covers watches in black paint or black – whatever they call it.

35. Zenith

Zenith watches are slightly more affordable than a Rolex and offer great value with their highly precise chronographs.
Zenith watches are slightly more affordable than Rolex and offer great value with their highly precise chronographs.

Sven Raphael: Zenith and people regard them highly

Federico: They regard them highly. They made a fantastic chronograph movement, but they really haven’t innovated for close to 70 years apart from recently. Now, they’re starting to. But, I would say B-minus.

36. Bell and Ross

Bell & Ross is one of the youngest established names in the luxury watch industry, founded in Paris in 1992.
Bell & Ross is one of the youngest established names in the luxury watch industry, founded in Paris in 1992.

Sven Raphael: Bell and Ross. To me, they seem more like a kind of fashion brand. Is that right?

Federico: They are a fashion brand invented by two kids in college who never pretended to make anything else but a fashion brand. I mean, they were very honest about it. We want a high-quality watch that looks cool. Because of their honesty, they get a D-plus instead of a D. But, interesting-looking watches.

37. Arnold & Son

Arnold & Son watches are expensive due to their premium materials, expert craftsmanship, and innovative designs.
Arnold & Son watches are expensive due to their premium materials, expert craftsmanship, and innovative designs.

Sven Raphael: Arnold & Son. Never heard.

Federico: A British brand originally changed hands many times. I’ve never had good experiences with them. While they’re very high-end, in my experience, they always break, and because of that, I’m gonna give them a D-plus, even though they would consider themselves probably a B. But they break, yeah.

Sven Raphael: But if they break, yeah, pointless. How does the watch break?

Federico: Honestly, poor design. It’s always a movement issue. Something’s too fragile, not enough research and development. It’s common, unfortunately.

38. Tudor

Tudor Black Bay GMT 79830RB Heritage Pepsi 41mm Nato Automatic Men
Tudor Black Bay GMT 79830RB Heritage Pepsi 41mm Nato Automatic Men

Sven Raphael: Okay. Interesting one. Tudor. Right. Often branded as the poor man’s Rolex, so would you rank them more in a D territory or better than Rolex?

Federico: So, no, I mean, they are the poor man’s Rolex because that’s what Rolex invented them to be – the affordable Rolex. They offer you more value for money than Rolex. Even though they are still significantly lower-end. I know I put Rolex as a C. I’m gonna put Tudor as a C-minus. Even though significantly lower-end than Rolex, you get more per dollar. You know, that’s why they’re so close.

Sven Raphael: Bigger bang for the buck.

Federico: Absolutely, absolutely.

39. Alpina

Alpinas collections are the Startimer collection, which feature all pilot watches.
Alpinas collection is the Startimer collection, which features all pilot watches.

Sven Raphael: Alpina. I only know them as the upgraded BMW.

Federico: I love the Alpena BMWs. This is a brand owned by Frederic Costa. Never sold particularly well. You can find them heavily discounted at a heavy discount. Not actually a bad watch. B-plus.

40. Seiko

Seiko Prospex Automatic Diver SRPG21K1
Seiko Prospex Automatic Diver SRPG21K1

Sven Raphael: Seiko. I think a lot of people, when they’re starting out and don’t have much money, they always talk about Seiko as being the go-to. What’s your take?

Federico: So, here’s the thing. This is a very hard brand to categorize because they make everything from awful, very inexpensive watches to some of the best watches in the world. If I say A, which is where I want to put them, people are going to scream at me because they’re higher than Rolex, and they’re up there with Patek Philippe. But, if we take value as part of the equation and the fact that it’s so universally loved, how can Seiko not at least be a B-minus. At least.

Top 16 Rolex Alternatives – Less Expensive, Just as Stylish!

41. Jacquet Droz

Jaquet Droz Tonneau GMT watch
Jaquet Droz Tonneau GMT watch

Sven Raphael: Jaquet Droz.

Federico: Jaquet Droz is owned by the Swatch group. They revived an old name from like the 1700s known for their asymmetric dials. Very expensive. Too expensive. C-minus.

42. Laurent Ferrier

Highly regarded for its classically finished timepieces.
Highly regarded for its classically finished timepieces.

Sven Raphael: Laurent Ferrier.

Federico: Laurent Ferrier, like FP Journe, an independent watchmaker. Super high-end. I mean, that’s an A, for sure.

43. Hamilton

American at origins and now Swiss based, the Hamilton Watch Company is one of the most appreciated watchmakers in the world.
American in origin and now Swiss-based, the Hamilton Watch Company is one of the most appreciated watchmakers in the world.

Sven Raphael: Hamilton Watches.

Federico: Hamilton, they make a couple of models I absolutely adore. It’s a great first Swiss automatic watch. Fairly inexpensive. C-minus.

44. Longines

They are a lower market luxury watchmaker compared to many other high-end luxury watchmakers
They are a lower-market luxury watchmaker compared to many other high-end luxury watchmakers

Sven Raphael: Longines.

Federico: Very long history, especially in chronographs. They have the same syndrome that I’m sure you’ve heard me say multiple times. Today, they make some very inexpensive bad watches, and they make some great watches for the value. I would put them at a C-minus.

45. H. Moser & Cie.

H. Moser And Cie
H. Moser And Cie

Sven Raphael: What about H. Moser & Cie?

Federico: Moser. Well, I’m wearing one. Guys, it’s an A. It has to be an A. Even if you disagree with me, you’re wrong. It’s an A.

[both laugh]

46. Parmigiani Fleurier

Quite simply, a Parmigiani Fleurier is designed to outlive its owner.
Quite simply, a Parmigiani Fleurier is designed to outlive its owner.

Sven Raphael: What about Parmigiani Fleurier?

Federico: Parmigiani Fleurier is a fantastic watch brand with a name that gets confused with cheese all too often. Their designs are a little hideous, but the watchmaking is top-notch. C-plus. If you can get it used, save a lot of money, it’s a B minus.

47. Gucci

Gucci Interlocking G
Gucci Interlocking G

Sven Raphael: And then, there’s, of course, Gucci.

Federico: Oh, well, is there something below F?

Sven Raphael: I don’t think so.

Federico: Like F-minus. Let me just set it on fire.

Sven Raphael: Interesting, interesting. Because Louis Vuitton, you’re like, is on the rise. Gucci is like…

Federico: Yeah, cause Gucci just puts a stripe on their watch and the G’s and and people think, “Oh!” You see a Gucci watch. It’s expensive. It’s Gucci. Louis Vuitton is is doing work in horology. You know, they’re inventing movements, hiring watchmakers, designing unique and contemporary timepieces. You might not like them, but you know, it’s quality; whereas, Gucci’s branding. Branding! Entirely, all branding.

Sven Raphael: Got it.

48. Weiss

Are manufactured and assembled in their Nashville workshop, and designed for everyday wear.
They are manufactured and assembled in their Nashville workshop, and designed for everyday wear.

Sven Raphael: What about Weiss?

Federico: Weiss. You’re gonna get me in trouble. It’s an American-made watch. Listen, it’s not a bad watch. It really isn’t, but it’s got to be a D because they focus too much on their American-made. It’s a Swiss design movement that is machined in Los Angeles. Like how American-made is that really? Like, I don’t know. They argue that it’s legal. I argue it’s deception. It’s a whole deal

49. Armani

Stainless steel remains the most preferable material for manufacturing the cases and bracelets.
Stainless steel remains the most preferable material for manufacturing the cases and bracelets.

Sven Raphael: And then Armani, which I would guess is probably similar to Gucci.

Federico: It’s like, equally, they both belong in the fire pit. F-minus.

50. Tissot

Tissot T-Classic PRX Powermatic 80
Tissot T-Classic PRX Powermatic 80

Sven Raphael: Tissot. So, I don’t know where to place them.

Federico: Tissot is one of those watches that gives you good bang-per-buck. Like it’s not a super high-end watch at all very similar to Hamilton. It’s like far from extraordinary, but it’s a great entry point into the Swiss watch, you know, game. Six, seven hundred dollars gets you a pretty nice watch. C-minus because their value is great, but D if it was just horology.

51. Ming

Ming 29.01 Worldtimer
Ming 29.01 Worldtimer

Sven Raphael: What about Ming watches? I followed Ming, you know, as a photographer long before he had watches. And then I knew that he was a watch photographer and then he started his watches. I looked at him once because I thought the design was unusual, was kind of flashy. But when I had it, I was like, “Oh, that feels not nice.”

Federico: I actually did love Ming watches. They exploded for a time. I’m selling for multiples of their price point. Unfortunately, there was a snafu where they had a limited edition release. It didn’t function well. No big deal. That can happen. Customers reached out. They didn’t get a very good response. This was a big talking point in the forums. If Ming would have handled that better, they would be a C. But, right now, they have to be a D-minus because, if you can’t handle customer service, then you shouldn’t be selling watches.

52. Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef Zodiac Midnight
Van Cleef Zodiac Midnight

Sven Raphael: Van Cleef & Arpels. More like a jewelry company.

Federico: A jewelry company. They’re known for poetic complications, so mechanisms that don’t do anything time-related. But, they’re almost like mechanized art. Two couples kissing on a bridge or, you know, almost like an ornate automata, like a jewelry box. If you can find one and if you’re a female because most of them are for ladies, then you know, it’s an A-minus. But, they make so few watches that it’s almost irrelevant.

53. Junghans

Junghans is often perceived as an under-the-radar watch brand.
Junghans is often perceived as an under-the-radar watch brand.

Sven Raphael: Junghans. German precision. Overrated?

Federico: Not overrated at all, I think. It’s one of those brands that is cool. It’s like a less expensive Nomos. It’s like the Hamilton of Germany. Got them at a discount. Decent quality. But, you know, D, D-plus just because they don’t do anything special, but they’re certainly not bad.

54. Bulova

Bulova 96B251
Bulova 96B251

Sven Raphael: Bulova.

Federico: Bulova. F-plus. Haven’t been relevant for decades.

55. Bovet Fleurier

Versatile and elegant, the Amadéo Fleurier 43 Monsieur BOVET
Versatile and elegant, the Amadéo Fleurier 43 Monsieur BOVET

Sven Raphael: Bovet Fleurier.

Federico: Very similar to Parmigiani, polarizing designs but fantastic watchmaking B-minus.

56. Oris

Oris is by no stretch considered high-horology or high-end compared to brands such as Patek Philippe.
Oris is by no stretch considered high-horology or high-end compared to brands such as Patek Philippe.

Sven Raphael: Oris.

Federico: Oris. A lot of people love this brand. Fantastic dive watches. Started making in-house movements now. Very fairly-priced. You can pick up a nice Oris for not much more than a thousand dollars. I’d say, C-minus along with Longines and Hamilton and stuff like that.

57. Ressence

Ressence watches are expensive, but there are reasons the unique design, and just how much it took to get there.
Ressence watches are expensive, but there are reasons for the unique design, and just how much it took to get there.

Sven Raphael: Ressence. Never heard of them.

Federico: Ressence. It’s kind of a hipster brand. Independent. They do like oil-filled watches with interesting displays. Pain in the butt if it ever breaks. Seems interesting but not for me.

Conclusion

Sven Raphael: Well, that was an impressive rundown of knowledge. Federico, thank you very much for sharing that with us, and our viewers appreciate you.

Federico: Thank you for the opportunity to talk fashion and watches with you. It’s been a true pleasure and a lot of fun.

Sven Raphael: Well, it’s also great to see the man in person because Federico often supplies us with watches for our videos, and I really appreciate you for that. Thank you, man.

Federico: Oh, my pleasure! Thank you for having me and, guys, thank you for watching. Don’t be too harsh on me in the comments.
