London is really perfect place for that. I am going to wear it at home when smoking cigars and drinking fine spirits, because I am very delighted in classic menswear and looking forward to buying my first peaces. Starting point will be LuxuRobes in purple and burgundy. Then some time later, bespoke is shure thing for me.

Thank you for this greate guide!

Best regards

Oscar

Keeping the temp turned down somewhat and wearing a sweater is my happy medium. Also, an economical choice. My smoking jacket is a fun elegant alternative to a sweater when I’m just relaxing in front of a fire, watching a movie, etc., and not planning on doing chores, or anything that might get it dirty. If you get past the feeling of being self conscious about wearing it, I think it’s also more cozy and indulgent than more casual warm alternatives. Maybe, because I don’t want to get it dirty, it reinforces the idea that this is “me” time, and I’m not going to feel the need jump up and wash the dishes, or something.

I would like to see more information about TV jackets. I’ve searched online but haven’t found anything about them. Indeed, this is the first I’ve heard of them. I assume they would be a mid-century invention.

In almost all other circumstances I would never button the bottom button but the manufacturer images I’ve seen suggest I should.

I have not yet found any credible images showing men of taste wearing their jackets.

Connected to the smoking jacket is the Victorian ‘house coat’ as seen in many films, particularly Sherlock Holmes. Similar to a dressing gown, it was worn over clothes (sans frock coat) to stay warm during Victorian winters. It featured a shawl collar, length to the knee, corded or material belt and, importantly, was fashioned from heavy wool or velvet. The smoking jacket is an evolution of this garment with a more particular purpose.

Cent. style “Banyan” or “Japanese Gown”, as a Dutch Academician of old fashioned style. A lot of 17th. and 18th. Cent. gentlemen preferred to be portraited in such an outfit, because it gave them an air of a scholar. Till deep in the 19th. Cent. the Banyan was a very popular attirement, till indeed the smoking jacket won the battle. Since the smoking jacket is considerable shorter than the ankle length Banyan, you can imagine that the smoking jacket gave the owner more freedom of movement. But what a loss of style !
